In today’s Province Newspaper I noticed an article by Dr. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen about ways to reduce your stress. Aside from anti anxiety medication that may be prescribed by your doctor and a dose of your favourite ‘guilty pleasure’ they mentioned three good strategies. I want to add two more for good measure.
Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen suggests: 1. Take up daily meditation. For example sit in a quiet spot with your eyes closed for 10 minutes. Be aware of every breath focus on each body part; from your head to toes.
2. Eat the right foods. For example 100% whole grain, lean proteins which reduces inflammation, and gives you sustained energy, which calms you.
3. Exercise…. start with 30 minutes a day of additional walking, aim for 10,000 total steps a day.
Shawn McNabb suggests: 4. Deep muscle relaxation. I want to take the good Dr.’s suggestion one step further. Learn a key phrase that you associate with relaxation, such as ‘serenity’, and
within your 10 minutes or more starting with the muscles in your face and working your way down to your both hands and arms, then your legs and toes, learning how to
clinch the muscles then release, each muscle group.
5. Have a cup of herbal tea and a bubble bath. Remember ‘Calgon (sp) take me away’, ok maybe I’m dating myself, but you get the picture.
If you would like to discuss this topic further in a private counselling session or a free consultation please contact Shawn McNabb, Surrey Counsellor today.
Remember, it’s okay to relax and take care of yourself.
